Nitrous Oxide for Vasectomy: What Laughing Gas Feels Like

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) for Vasectomy | Dr. Theodore Cisu

Thinking about laughing gas for your vasectomy? What nitrous oxide feels like, why you can drive yourself home, how it compares with Valium, and the cost.
Dr. Theodore Cisu

The short answer: Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a mild calming gas you breathe through a small mask during your vasectomy. It takes the edge off nerves, wears off within minutes after the mask comes off, and if it's the only comfort medicine you use, you can drive yourself home. With Dr. Cisu it's an optional $75 add-on.

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a gas that has been used for comfort in medicine and dentistry for a long time. You may know it from the dentist's chair. It doesn't put you to sleep. You stay awake, you can talk, and you're in control the whole time. It simply helps you relax.

Nitrous doesn't replace numbing. Every vasectomy with Dr. Cisu starts with needle-free numbing, so the area itself is numb. Nitrous works on the other half of the experience: the nerves, the waiting, the feeling of lying on a table thinking about it.

What does laughing gas feel like during a vasectomy?

You breathe normally through a small mask over your nose. Within a few minutes, most men feel light, warm and a little floaty. Some feel tingly in their hands or feet. Some feel giggly, though most just feel calm. Time tends to pass quickly.

You can still hear everything and answer questions. If you ever feel like it's too much, you take a few breaths of room air and the feeling fades fast.

Why many men choose it

A vasectomy is short. The procedure itself usually takes about 10 minutes, and you're in and out in about 45. Still, plenty of men feel more anxious beforehand than the procedure deserves. That's normal. Nitrous helps with that anxiety without the longer fog of a pill, so you can get back to your day sooner.

Nitrous only, Valium plus nitrous, or Valium only

Dr. Cisu offers three comfort options. You'll talk through them at your consultation.

  • Nitrous oxide only. Wears off within minutes. You can drive yourself home.
  • Valium plus nitrous oxide. Recommended for most men. Valium is a calming pill taken before the procedure, and nitrous adds extra comfort during it. You'll need a driver.
  • Valium only. A calming pill without the gas. You'll need a driver.

Your instructions will tell you exactly when and how to take any medicine. Follow those first.

Can I drive myself home after nitrous oxide?

Yes, if nitrous is the only comfort medicine you had. Nitrous clears from your body quickly once you stop breathing it. The team will check that you feel clear-headed before you leave. If you took Valium, even with nitrous, plan on someone else driving.

This is one reason nitrous-only is popular with men who want to keep the day simple, including those who travel in for their vasectomy.

Is nitrous oxide safe? Who shouldn't use it?

For most healthy adults, nitrous oxide used briefly in a medical setting is well tolerated. Some men feel mild nausea or a little lightheaded. Both usually pass soon after the mask comes off.

Nitrous may not be right for you if you have:

  • Recent eye surgery with a gas bubble, or recent ear surgery
  • A history of a collapsed lung or serious lung disease
  • A known vitamin B12 deficiency
  • A blocked bowel or certain other trapped-gas conditions

Share your health history and medicines at your consultation. Dr. Cisu will help you choose a safe option.

What it costs

Nitrous oxide is a $75 add-on. You'll know your comfort plan and this cost before the day of your procedure. For the rest of the cost picture, see Vasectomy cost in Virginia.

Frequently asked questions

Will laughing gas knock me out?

No. You stay awake and able to talk. Nitrous helps you relax, but you remain aware of what's happening.

Do I still get numbing medicine if I use nitrous?

Yes. Every vasectomy includes needle-free numbing. Nitrous is for comfort and calm, not for numbing the area.

How fast does nitrous wear off?

Within minutes of breathing room air again. That's why you can drive yourself home if nitrous is your only comfort medicine.

Can I use nitrous if I'm nervous about needles?

Yes. Many needle-anxious men pair nitrous with needle-free numbing so there's no shot and less worry.

Can I eat before a vasectomy with nitrous?

Follow the instructions you receive before your procedure. They'll tell you what to do about food and drink.
