Friday Vasectomy: Recover Over the Weekend

Friday Vasectomy: Recover Over the Weekend | Dr. Theodore Cisu

Why many men book a Friday vasectomy: rest over the weekend, back to desk work by Monday for many. Plus how to plan the days after.

The short answer: Friday is the most popular day for a vasectomy in Dr. Cisu's clinics. The procedure usually takes about 10 minutes, the first day or two are for rest, and the weekend covers them. Many men with desk jobs are back at work on Monday.

Recover on your weekend, not your work week

The first 48 hours after a vasectomy are for the couch: feet up, ice on, nothing heavy. A Friday procedure lines those days up with Saturday and Sunday, so you use fewer days off work.

How a Friday vasectomy works

  1. Telehealth consult earlier in the week or before. Meet Dr. Cisu by video, ask your questions and pick your date.
  2. Friday morning: the procedure. About 10 minutes, no scalpel and no needle. Most men are in and out in about 45 minutes.
  3. Friday afternoon: home and rest. With nitrous oxide only, you can drive yourself home. With Valium, bring a driver.
  4. Saturday and Sunday: take it easy. Ice, supportive underwear and over-the-counter pain relief as directed.
  5. Monday: back to a desk job for many men. Physical jobs usually need more time.

Make the weekend work for you

  • Stock up on ice packs, snacks and something good to watch.
  • Line up help with kids, yard work and anything heavy.
  • Skip the gym, sports and heavy lifting for about a week.
  • Hold off on sexual activity for about a week, and keep using birth control until your semen test clears you.

Popular dates fill early

Fridays are popular, and dates around holidays and big sporting weekends go quickly. Request your consultation early if you have a particular weekend in mind.

Frequently asked questions

Do you offer Saturday vasectomies?

Appointments are on weekdays. A Friday appointment gives you much of the same weekend recovery.

Can I go back to work on Monday?

Many men with desk jobs can. If your job is physical, plan on more time off, as directed.

Can I watch the game all weekend?

That's a good plan. Resting on the couch with ice is exactly what the first couple of days call for.
